Skating rink planned at Vandiyur tank

By Our Staff Reporter

MADURAI, FEB. 7 . A state-of-the-art skating rink is coming up along the Vandiyur tank at K.K. Nagar, at a cost of Rs.32 lakhs. The construction work of the new sports centre, which will have a roller-skating track around a skating-hockey floor, is said to be the first of its kind in the southern districts.

Talking to presspersons here yesterday, the Collector, B. Chandra Mohan, said 25 per cent of the project cost would be collected as public contribution under the self-sufficiency scheme. The District Welfare Committee had so far collected Rs.1.5 lakhs for the project. Stating that the public contribution was received in cash and kind, such as building materials, Dr. Chandra Mohan said, "If we get sufficient contribution, the skating rink will get a roofing". The multi-purpose sporting facility would also accommodate badminton and shuttle courts, he added

Pointing to the existing Walkers' Club and a park along the Vandiyur tank, the Collector said with the construction of the skating rink, K.K. Nagar would become a major centre for recreational activity. The Executive Engineer, Public Works Department, R. Sakthivel, said that landscaping of the 82,000 square feet of land had been completed for constructing the 230 feet by 240 feet skating rink. The work would be completed in three months.

The Collector participated in the `Bhoomi pooja' for the skating rink in the morning.
