Dandiya is an immensely popular stick dance of the nine-day long Navratri festival celebration in India. In Surat, young girls and boys dressed in colorful traditional attire and performed Dandiya on roller skates, which was a special attraction.
[Meena Modi, Skating Teacher]:
“Around 250 students have participated in the dandiya and garba dance program on skates. They have been practicing it for two years. Now they have learned how to perform dandiya on skates properly.”
Dandiya lovers enjoyed every bit of dance and music. The young boys and girls, in particular, enjoyed the experience.
[Shivang Aggarwal, Participant]:
"I like skating very much. More than studying, I like to go skating. I like to dance on skates.”
"Navratri," which literally means nine lights, is observed twice a year. It lasts for nine days and celebrated in the months of April-May and September-October.
